Commercial Awnings
I have talked about how retractable sun awnings can improve your home but there is now quite a market for commercial awnings. At first you may think why any company would need a sun awning but looking closer the benefits of a sun awning at commercial premises is obvious.
This primary reason why people want a sun awning for their commercial premises is due to the smoking ban. The smoking ban in the UK has caused an issue for many businesses. Mainly businesses that rely on the general public spending their money within a building. This applies to bingo halls, nightclubs and the number one reason for a commercial awning - the good old pub.
People being forced outside to smoke can create a real issue, especially without any shelter. It is no longer acceptable to even create a building for smokers as it then breaks the law to smoke within. An awning provides some degree of shelter from the sun, rain and other weather for the smokers. Not only this it increases the external space for all customers to go out and enjoy the outdoor weather.
Commercial awnings have been found for years, think of your local green grocer - the florist - often these kind of shops have installed, and have for years, commercial awnings to protect their stock whilst being able to display it outside the shop. These kind of awnings have certainly been around a long time before residential awnings came onto the market.
More and more commercial awnings are popping up at factories and offices. This is simply to give employees who choose to smoke, some kind of shelter from the sun and rain.
If you are considering purchasing a commercial awning and intend to use it for rain shelter then ensure that you have checked with the manufacturer that the awning is capable of withstanding rain. Most awnings will allow water to pool on the fabric if left out in heavy rain or not adjusted correctly - this will result in the awning breaking, and can be quite dangerous for anyone unfortunate to be under the awning at the time.
Commercial Awnings…
Sun awnings provide valuable sun protection for the home but they also have commercial values - especially with the smoking ban….
June 23rd, 2008 at 1:28 pmInteresting how businesses can profit from the smoking ban. I am not sure wether the profits of awning manufacturers companesate for the losses in pubs, but anyhow one man’s meat is another man’s poison…
June 30th, 2008 at 1:42 pm@Michael, that’s a great point! Whatever the circumstances, someone somewhere will find a way to market something and make a profit! I was interested by the news the other day that 400,000 people have quit smoking because of the ban.
Cheers, Dan

July 8th, 2008 at 8:00 pmI agree. Every time one market closes a new business opportunity emerges.
July 17th, 2008 at 11:47 pmI did not realize that England was also banning cigarette smoking. I don’t know why, but I thought that it was an American trend.
I have mixed feelings about it. Smoking is terrible for you, but it just seems wrong to go into a pub and not be able to smoke. It seems like a loss of freedom.

July 22nd, 2008 at 11:44 amWe are currently looking into supplying sun awnings ourselves. In the past few years since the smoking ban, many Pubs are offering outside spaces where patrons can take their drink and smoke. The bad British weather has meant that these areas need to be covered, however the law dictates that the structure cannot have 3 or more walls (apparently). this has lead to Pubs building lean tos and Awnings.
I think the awning is perhaps the best and most attractive solution.

These things are cool. My parents have one installed and I love how easily they retract and fold out. Very nifty if you really don’t want to build a permanent fixture in the backyard for shading.

August 18th, 2008 at 4:01 amJust in reply to my last comment, we have updates our web address to http://www.bruceblinds.co.uk. Thanks for checking us out. We have almost finalised a deal with an Awnings supplier in the US to import snazzy awnings to the UK, will keep you posted on the progress.
August 25th, 2008 at 2:31 pmI’m all for smoke banning, as I don’t think anyone could say that it’s not causing death and illness. I hope people would take it more seriously and more countries would join this ban.
August 29th, 2008 at 10:36 amThis is interesting to know why commercial awnings are applied to buildings- for smoking reason. Is that means smoking inside the building is for those who don’t smoke, as it smoke is equal injurious for smoker and non-smoker around.
September 1st, 2008 at 9:50 pmI think this whole smoking ban stuff is way overblown. I don’t even smoke.
Real estate was more fun when your clients could smoke in your office.

September 14th, 2008 at 2:36 amPersonally I am in favor of the smoking ban. I am a non-smoker, and I hated it when I would go to some restaurant and be trying to eat and the people next to me are spoiling my meal… It didn’t happen all of the time, but it did happen… of course I think that some places, like bars, should allow smoking, so I don’t agree with a total ban…
September 17th, 2008 at 7:52 pmYou’re so right - since the smoking ban - there has been a huge uptake on sun awnings… although, many a pub, this is not saving.
September 18th, 2008 at 4:30 pmIt’s quite strange, now the band has been out for sometime that when going overseas and landing up in hotels where smoking is permited, it seems like a distant memory!
September 18th, 2008 at 4:38 pmI read with interest how you guys fox these awnings. We just had new windows installed at work the other day and that was fascinating in itself.

Will be getting one if it’s affordable for my virtual office.
September 26th, 2008 at 11:54 amI used to work in the camping trade and was always worried by the lack of work going into UV protection. I wonder how these hold up
October 8th, 2008 at 2:53 pmI work in a restaurent in Denmark, where there is also a smoking ban and pretty cold. so a lot of companies buy commercial awnings, but they also put sides on them and a heater. This makes a nice smoking room.
October 9th, 2008 at 11:04 amSmoking was banned in Pubs and Clubs in my home town 2 years ago and half of them are still trying to catch up and build beer gardens for the smokers.
October 9th, 2008 at 2:19 pmConsidering the state of the British summer this year, a decent awning is an essential purchase for your home if you ever want to have a decent BBQ.

October 23rd, 2008 at 8:33 amI have an awning installed at my office building. We have a big patio area which has lovely views of the surrounding town and if we have guests you take them out there, in the shelter on a nice day and it’s very impressive.
Clients are always knocked off there feet.
October 29th, 2008 at 4:51 pmA nice solution for summer cafes - no need to use sun glasses or blink, and the general feeling of being in the shade when it is hot makes it quite seasonable.
November 3rd, 2008 at 9:12 pmThese things are really very nice. I had one installed and I love how easily they retract and fold out. There are great if don’t want to build a permanent awning onto your home for shade.
